Five accessories for travelling with pets

If you are taking your pet on a journey or holiday, here’s our pick of the best accessories.

When travelling with pets, the right equipment will help to keep both you and your animals safe and ensure a smoother journey. We look at five trip essentials.

  1. Pet carrier

Pet carriers come in all shapes and sizes, tailored to your particular animal, and the type of transportation required. You can get large metal frames with single or double doors, lightweight steel and canvas carry cages, and airline-approved transportation kennels made of wire mesh and strong plastic.

  2. Crates and cages

If you regularly travel with your pet, then you might want to consider a fixed cage in the back of your vehicle. Cages and crates are available and can be secured so they don’t move during the journey. Using a cage gives your pet its own space, and helps keep it safe in case of an accident.

  3. Car seat covers

Use removable old sheets, blankets and towels to cover and protect your car seats. This will help you to keep them clean and odour free. It is also possible to buy seat covers that are made especially for the model of car you drive. Look for washable options.

  4. Cleaning kit

A small bag with a few cleaning items is handy for pet owners who travel with their pets. You should pack paper kitchen towels for cleaning animals and upholstery alike, and for drying up. Plastic bags and animal waste bags are useful, and you should have an antibacterial spray, or even water to clean any part of the vehicle that becomes soiled.

  5. Health and safety kit

One last item to bring on your car journeys is a health and safety kit, comprising a travel water box, a spare harness or lead, a first aid kit, a blanket or two for warmth, and a few pet toys.
