Spring holidays: The new summer?

The cost of peak time family holidays combined with London's Olympic Games is forcing people to take time off in the spring rather than summer for their holidays this year, a survey has claimed.

Nearly a third of 2,000 adult respondents revealed they have planned for a spring holiday. Results from the last three years suggest this figure has grown from a fifth, according to the study by savings firm ING Direct.

People booking spring breaks will be eager to see what effect their revised calendar plans will have on their travel insurance premiums.

ING Direct concluded that there has been a decline in the amount of holiday-goers heading off in the summer over recent years.

If families find they can escape in the spring for much less, it is understandable that they choose not to holiday in summer time, said chief executive Richard Doe.

Compounding this was the forthcoming "outstanding summer of sport, with one of the greatest sporting events in the world taking place on our doorstep," he added.
